Message: “Where Are All the Hypocrites?”

  • We All Are Hypocrites
  • Our hypocrisy is forgiven by God
  • We need to forgive those in our lives who have practiced hypocrisy.
  • We All Need to move past our Hypocrisy

Charles Schultz once drew a cartoon of Charlie Brown standing on a pew in church looking over the congregation and asking the question:  “Where are all the hypocrites?”

“I hope you have not been leading a double life, pretending to be wicked, and being really good all the time.”  Wilde, The Importance of Being Earnest

Opening Call to Worship

Those who are full of themselves have no room for God,

and those who look down on others will never be honest about themselves.

Therefore let us come before God with humility,

accepting God’s grace with gratitude and extending that grace to others.

Lord God, we come today with our joys and our sorrows,

our doubts and our affirmations,

our strengths and our weaknesses,

our hesitancy and our boldness.

Therefore we make no claims on your grace,

asking only that you receive us just the way we are.

As we gather here this morning,

we acknowledge that we come to receive grace rather than reward,

that it’s more appropriate for us to confess than to judge,

that it’s more fitting to apply the message to ourselves than to our neighbor.

So we come in humility, awaiting your pardon and your power,

in the name of Jesus our Lord.

The LORD upholds all who are falling,

and raises up all who are bowed down.

“As those who by God’s grace have received His forgiveness for your hypocrisy, go forth and practice forgiveness yourselves toward all who have practiced hypocrisy toward you.  And the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.  Amen”
